The same digit is worth different amounts depending on where it sits.
split 14 734 into its places, reading from the right: 4 ones, 3 tens, 7 hundreds, 4 thousands, 1 ten thousand.
the FIRST 4 sits in the thousands place, so it is worth 4000.
the SECOND 4 sits in the ones place, so it is worth 4.
the difference is 4000 − 4 = 3996.
The question asks for the difference between the VALUES, not between the digits — the digits are both 4, and 4 − 4 would be 0.
