- A compass, with North at the top.

- The direction OPPOSITE North.
Opposite means straight across the middle, not a quarter of the way round.
Put a ruler on North and carry the line straight through the centre. It comes out at the bottom, at South.
The compass makes two pairs that face each other: North with South, and East with West.
East and West are each a QUARTER turn from North, not opposite it. North-east is not one of the four main points at all.
North is at the top and South is at the bottom — a straight line through the middle. ✓
